EARLY YEARíS NEWS
RATS!
Rats is based on the story of the Pied Piper, a fairy tale in a medieval town. Hamelin is overrun with cheeky rodents. When a piper appears with the promise of eliminating the rats, the town is overjoyed. Please come and join us on Thursday, April 29th at 7:30 p.m.
WSO Concert
Mr. Wallmann and Ms. OíBrienís classes traveled to Brandon on Wednesday to hear a wonderful concert for students by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. The Concert Hall was filled to capacity with a very attentive and responsive student audience. The theme was ìOrchestra Gamesî relating to the Olympic Games and Music from many countries. Composers featured were J. S. Bach, John Williams, Tchaikovsky, Satie, Bartok, Grainger, Ginastera and Estacio. The students also saw Russian dancers and Brazilian dancers, heard a Chinese Flute called a Dizi and listened to two young ìRising Starsî teenagers singing a song from ìHerculesî. There were also student performances on recorder (Theme from Chariots of Fire) and students performing a Morris dance. (Shepherdís Hey).
There was so much to see and hear in this very varied concert conducted by Richard Lee, the orchestraís resident conductor.
We are very fortunate in the Westman area to have the opportunity to see and hear professional musicians. The students had a great experience on Wednesday morning.

BAND NEWS
Congratulations to the grade 8-9 Souris/Hartney Band for their excellent performance at the Beginning Band Festival in Brandon. They received very positive comments and also took away some key points to improve upon their skills. A big Bravo to Brooke Gillis for her trumpet solo that received glowing praise from a judge.
Please note -that based on the popular success of the last Bothwell Cheese fundraiser- the Band Boosters are having a Spring Bothwell Cheese
Fundraiser. All Band students in grades 7-12 should have an order form. This round, there are prizes up for grabs from local sponsors - Avalon Theatre, Forbidden Flavours, and Subway. Every student has an opportunity to win if they sell cheese. The more cheese sold allows a higher probability of winning a prize.
The Band Boosters are once again offering funds for Music Camp Scholarships for the summer of 2010. Students who are interested in applying for the Booster Scholarship are asked to receive a form from Mr. Cwir, or go to the Band website at www.shmb.ca/~paulc to download the information/application form. These are due by Wednesday, May 5th.
The Senior Band is once again going on their annual tour this May. They will be touring Southern Manitoba May 26th-28th. Preliminary information sheets went home and further information should be coming out in the near future. Stay tuned!

GIRLíS FASTBALL
Our girlsí fastball team played their first league game of the season against Elkhorn here in Souris on Monday at the Fairgrounds.
The visitors, having only one experienced pitcher, gave our first time players plenty to handle. Our first year pitchers managed to keep the game close for the first three innings.
With the score 7-4, at the end of the third, Elkhorn opened it up in the fourth and fifth innings, handing our girls their first loss of the season.
Mr. Adams was pleased with the effort, as only two errors were made and most of the first year players recorded hits off the experienced Elkhorn pitcher.

GREEN WEEK
The Town Beautification Committee will be hosting a Green Week in May with various activities. Green week begins on Saturday, May 8th at 9:30 a.m. at the cookhouse in the campground. Here, we'll start our spring clean up. Participants will be assigned an area around town where they can pick up litter. At 11:30 a.m. everyone will meet back at the cookhouse for a BBQ. Anyone and everyone are invited to participate in the spring clean up. Kids, ask your parents to go and help because after all, you are the ones who will inherit this town: After the clean-up and all week long the TBC will be airing environmental specials on the access channel. On Saturday, May 15th (garage sale day)í the TBC will be selling big black composters really cheap. We'll have our stand set up in the parking lot
across from the Bigway. Composting is a great way to reduce household garbage and turn yucky food leftovers into great soil for your garden. Compost helps plants grow big and strong and delivers vital micronutrients back into the earth.~
Hope to see lots of people out for our first Green Week because looking after the environment is everyone's responsibility.
