NEWS FROM THE OFFICE
Another busy week has come and gone!
Congratulations to the Varsity Boys and Girls
Volleyball Teams on a great showing at last
weekends Provincial Tournament in Lac du
Bonnet.  The girls finished fourth and the
boys lost a heart breaker in the final to
Russell.  We have a number of players heading
to the Graduating All-Star Game this weekend
in Winnipeg.  We wish you all the best and
enjoy this great honour.

Our Annual Food Bank Drive is taking place
until December 11th.  This yearís theme is the
ëPolar Bear Plungeí.  If the staff and students
fill my office with non perishable food, Mr.
Quigley, Mr. Elder and Mr. Kindle will take the
plunge into icy waters at Souris School.  The
window is about º full.  Letís Fill the Window!

I would like to wish the Souris Sabreís Hockey
Team all the best at the Genisis Hockey
Tournament in Brandon this weekend.  They
play Crocus Plains at 12:00 today and Dryden
at 6:00 p.m..  At the present time the Sabre
Hockey team is ranked #1 in the A-AA weekly
rankings.  Best of Luck.

Overdue Canteen Bills
Forbidden Flavours would like to have all the
students who owe I.O.Uís at the canteen to
pay them up before Christmas.

The canteen does not have to let anyone run
up lunch tabs, so as a return kindness to them,
please pay your bills in a timely fashion.  It is a
privilege, not a right to run a tab!

As always, if you have any questions or
concerns, please feel free to call me directly
at 483-6230.  Enjoy your weekend and we will
see you on Monday.
 ïMr. Bob Young

PARENT ADVISORY COUNCIL MEETING
CALLED FOR NEXT WEEK
The SSPAC executive has called an extra
parent council meeting, which will be held next
week on Tuesday, December 8, 2009. We
have asked that the School Administration,
the Superintendent of the School Division and
our 3 local trustees, be in attendance.  Due to
the current situation, with the changes that
were made to the Early Years Concert and
Grade 5 Musical, we feel that parents need to
be given another opportunity to hear from the
3 levels of our school system involved in this
decision; to voice their concerns and to ask
questions. In addition to the concert; the
following will be on Tuesdayís agenda:
clarification of winter storm procedures,
specifically in regards to bussed students and
clarification of the letter sent home with
Grade 4 students, related to the schoolís
allergy policy.

The meeting will be start at 6:30 pm, which is
earlier than regular PAC meetings. This is
being done in an effort to allow time for all
those present to have the opportunity to be
heard. There will be a presenterís list, which
anyone wanting an opportunity to speak, should
sign upon arrival. The meeting will run no
longer than 3 hours.

This meeting is open to all parents/guardians
of students attending the school, members of
the community and all paid employees of the
school. The meeting will take place in Room 12
at the school.

**IMPORTANT NOTICE**
from
Southwest Horizon School Division

ATTENTION PARENTS
Cold or stormy weather may result in bus
schedules being unavoidably delayed.  We
encourage parents to use extra caution with
children on those days.  Children should be
accompanied to the bus stop or have very
clear instructions on what to do if the bus
does not arrive.  Never leave children at the
stop without a backup arrangement in the
event of an emergency.  Please refer to the
pamphlet ìSchool Bus Safety Guidelinesî
distributed by the Southwest Horizon School
Division to all families requiring school bus
service.  If you wish to have another copy you

POLAR BEAR PLUNGE!
Students in Kindergarten to Grade 12 are
asked to bring in non-perishable food items
for our local food bank. Last year we filled Mr.
Young's office window and our principals spent
the afternoon braving the cold up on the roof
of our school. Our food bank was both
overwhelmed and grateful with the generosity
shown by our community. This year the need is
great. There are many families that rely on
the food bank throughout the year. Our goal is
to fill Mr. Young's window once again. If we
can do it, three of our favourite teachers will
take a Polar Bear Plunge into an icy outdoor
pool of icy water.  They are Mr. Quigley, Mr.
Elder,  and Mr. Kindle. We only have FIVE days
left to meet our goal. If we don't meet our
goal, they don't go for a swim. We can do it!!!!!!
Please bring groceries to the school before
December 11th .
 ïMrs. Darlene McLeod

THANK YOU!
On behalf of the Souris Band Boosters I
would like to thank everyone who
bought, sold, and helped distribute the
cheese.

Also thank you to the elementary staff who
let us take over their staff room , the
custodians who graciously brought in tables
for us, to the girls who stayed late and put
the tables down.  Also to David Doyle who
made delivery runs for us.  Many hands make
light work and just make things so
much easier for those organizing fund raisers.

Thank you

VOLLEYBALL
Graduating All Star Game
This weekend seven players and two coaches
from Souris have been selected to attend and
participate in the Provincial Graduating All-
Star game to be held in Winnipeg.

In the girls game Alyssa Warnett, Brynna
Walker, Shandie Parobec and Delaney Husband
will play, while Rhonda Young is the AA coach.
On the boyís side, Brett Young, Luke Hill and
Sean Morrison will compete.  Mike Kindle was
selected as the AA coach of the year.

Following a brunch at the Radisson Hotel,
matches will be played at Tech Voc School.

Zone 9 All Star Game
The Zone 9 All Star game was held in Souris
on Wednesday, December 2nd.  Players from 12
schools in the Zone closed out their season
participating in this fun-filled contest.

Senior Girls Volleyball
After a very successful season including three
tournament championships in Roblin, Neelin
and Portage along with two second place
finishes in Weyburn and Elton and the Zone 9
League Championship title, the Souris Sabres
girlís varsity volleyball team fell short in their
bid for a provincial title in Lac du Bonnet last
weekend.  In round robin play, the girls
finished first in the pool with straight set
victories over Lac du Bonnet, Warren, Rivers
and Niverville.  In their quarter final playoff
match they defeated Major Pratt Trojans
from Russell 2-0.  They were defeated by
Elton in the semi-finals and had to stay on the
court to play the bronze medal match against
their zone rivals, Killarney.  Trying to work
through the disappointing loss proved too
much and the Sabres settled for 4th.  Alyssa
Warnett was chosen to receive the Playerís
Choice Award of the tournament.

Senior Varsity Boys
The Varsity Boys volleyball team came as close
as a team could come to winning the Provincial
Championships without doing it.  The team
finished first in their pool defeating Lac Du
Bonnet, Neepawa, Warren, and a very tough
team from Landmark.  The team defeated
Killarney in the quarter-final, Elton in the
semi-final, advancing to face their arch rivals
from Major Pratt of Russell.  The match was
hard fought, intense, and played at a level
beyond what either team had ever before
performed at.  Souris came out flying and won
the first set 25-22.  They did so again in the
second and were up 17-12 until there was a
real momentum shift.  Major Pratt battled
back and took the second set 25-22.  The
tiebreaking and third set was to be played up
to 15 points, where the winner must do so by
two. The third set started in the favour of
Major Pratt as they held a 5-1 lead early on.
However, Souris showed tremendous heart and
took the lead 8-7 midway through.  Souris
surged ahead to take a 14-12 lead, which gave
the team two championship points.  Alas, it was
not meant to be.  Major Pratt hung on and
eventually defeated our boys 19-17, winning
the Championship.

Our team not only achieved winning the silver
medals, but also many individual honours.
Brett Young was named player of the game in
four matches, while Troy Chandler was in two,
and Tanner Butler in one.  Brett and Tanner
were also named to the tournament All-Star
team.

Middle Years Girls Volleyball
Last Friday and Saturday the grade 7&8 girls
VB teams combined forces and attended the
year end tournament in Waverly School. The
girls won all 4 of their games! Ms. Snaith and
Mrs. Sobry are very proud of the girlís
efforts last weekend. What an exciting way to
end the season!!
