NEWS FROM THE OFFICE
This week we would like to feature two of our students who have been involved in activities outside of Souris School.  The first student is Kaitlyn Fraser.

6410_20052_0.jpg

The morning of May 9th was an early one for some of the Tally Ho stables team. My coaches Terry and Cindy Classen and their 4 year old daughter Ava, as well as Sydney Hewins, Karly Woods and myself were up at 4:00 a.m. to head to Omaha, Nebraska.

We spent the next 4 days riding under the instruction of Karen Cudmore. Karen is the 5th ranked international show jumper in North America. She has been a member of the Canadian Developing Riders Tour, Canadian Team for the World Cup, member of the 2nd place team at the CN Nations Cup and many more achievements.

In Omaha the girls and I rode 3 to 4 horses a day. The horses ranged from young and just broke to world class horses. But no matter what we rode we all tried our best and learned a lot!

My goal is to go pro before the age of 21 and qualify for the International Young Riders Team, so getting to train with such a talented person like Karen was a huge honor.

Thanks to the teachers who let me miss school to go to Omaha!
        ïKaitlyn Fraser

Also, Kaitlyn recently received word that she has been selected as the first-prize winner from grade-ten students in the 2009-2010 National Student Short-Story Contest held by Polar Expressions Publishing.  As a result of her outstanding accomplishment, Kaitlyn has received $140.00 and a certificate for her winning entry, Goodnight Alex.  Souris School, has received a matching prize.

Polar Expressions received thousands of entries from almost 500 schools across Canada for their two students contests (poetry and short story).  This contest is a good tool for educators in promoting poetry and prose with the goal of inspiring a lifelong enchantment.  It gives students across our diverse nation a chance to see their work in print and compare it with that of their peers.

For more information on Polar Expressions Publishing visit www.polarexpressions.ca to learn about upcoming contests.

Here is Kaitlynís first prize-winner.

ìGood Night, Alexî
He stepped out of the rig truck into the chilling February air. He grabbed his coat from the passenger seat and yanked on it quickly, then slammed the truck door hard. Her eyes followed him as he walked across the dimly Iit sidewalk towards the door of the diner and pulled it open with his sleeve-covered hand.

"Who is that?'" Dilian asked the waitress bringing Dilian her meal.

He wiped his boots on the mat and walked past her booth towards the back of the restaurant. Dilion watched him, until their eyes met. Then, as quickly as it happened, she looked away. He was handsome, a lot younger than most of the rig workers around, but his face was the only thing that gave it away. He was about six feet tall with uncombed brown hair.  He had broad shoulders and a light athletic build. His overalls were two sizes too big and looked sloppy. He had a gruff persona to him and something about him was alluring. She glanced back quickly to see he had sat down with four other riggers.
"That's Alex Millin," the waitress replied. "He works with J&R Drilling. Apparently he's like sixteen, dropped out of school 'cause he got some girl pregnant. Dumb kid, if you ask me."

Dilian didn't say much, but just looked over again. He sat there with the men, most of them much older.   The four others talked loudly and joked around, but Alex sat there, almost isolated from the others. Dilian glanced over at him a few times while she ate, usually to find him picking at his half eaten hamburger or playing with his empty coke bottle.  There was something about Alex that made her wonder what was behind those dark brown eyes.

It was nearing eight o'clock when Dilian got home. She said good night to her parents and started down the stairs to her room. Three stairs from the bottom, she heard her cell phone ringing in her bedroom. She ran to answer the call, and noted it came from a blocked number.

"Hello," Dilion said into the phone.

A steady quiet voice came to the receiver,
ìI heard what that waitress said today. I know what everyone thinks."

For a moment, Dilian was confused.

The voice continued, "You make choices in your life you may or may not like, but at the end of the day you gotta be able to look in the mirror and know you're trying your hardest."

It was then Dilian knew exactly who it was.
"I'm scared, I'm tired, I feel alone, and sometimes I don't know if I can go on, but when I look into the eyes of my little girl,  I forget about the things people say to bring me down. She's my life now and I will do everything in my power to give her what I never had.  The line went dead.

Dilian just sat there. Then she whispered into the receiver. "Good night, Alex." .

The second student is Hayden McKinney.

Free Piano
Our Early Years Music Room purchased a new piano a few years ago, through generous donations and fundraising.  We thoroughly enjoy and appreciate this new piano.  We now have decided to say goodbye to the old piano and find a new home for it.

The piano is a ëClassicí from the ëMason & Risch Co.í.  The piano tuner, Dale Whetter, feels it would be a good piano for beginner students.
SoÖ..anyone who would like a FREE piano for your home, please call the school at 483-2161 and dial O and leave your name with the secretaries.  If there are a few people interested a name will be drawn out of a hat.  Moving and tuning will be your responsibility.

THANK YOU
Special thanks to all the staff who have graciously allowed me to be a part of their classrooms over the last three years; to all the EA's for their enthusiasm in helping out; and to all the custodial staffs for their patience -- and even encouragement - of our creative (and occasionally messy!) learning projects; and most of all, thank you to the students for their warm welcomes and enthusiastic creativity -- I have been charmed by you all!  The Arts Integration Project was set up three years ago by Dale Peake to use hands-on 'arts' to teach curriculum content.  Initially, it was a one-year trial.  Through a combination of ArtsSmarts grant funding and Division monies we completed 65 projects that first year, so Division funds were found to continue it for another two years.  This year, I expect to complete 150 arts integration projects K-12 throughout six schools and two colony schools.  We have used photography, painting, music, story-telling, sculpting, role-playing, mosaics and many combinations of skills to engage students in math, ELA, Canadian history, geography, science, social studies and health.  We have composed songs about nutrition and performed them in the produce section of the grocery store.  We have sculpted "eyeball" necklaces to learn the parts of the eye.  We have made chess pieces to learn about the social roles of Viking society.  We have re-enacted scenes of Louis Riel's life and captured it with sepia photography.  In all, over the three years, we have found 300 projects to teach required material in a fresh, engaging hands-on way.  For me, it has been challenging, but delightful and I will miss watching all those 'lightbulbs' turn on. Division funding has been discontinued for my salary in next year's budget, but although I have found other employment for the fall, I still hope, if demand warrants, I will be given opportunities to work with teachers at in-services or PD workshops on fresh integration ideas to help students continue to learn in this dynamic and engaging way...there are still many, many new ideas to try!  Thank you all for your kindness and I hope you will keep in touch! Sincerely, Joan Trott (jtcreativesolutions@yahoo.ca)

CAN YOU HELP?
6410_20052_3.jpg

My name is Ashley Coulthard.  I am a Grade 11 student at Souris School.  As part of a Biology project, I am going to set up a drink tab collection bin at our school.  I am looking for your help in saving tabs at home and bringing them to our bin.  We will not only be helping handicapped children, who are in need of specialized wheelchairs, weíll also be recycling!

Holy Cross School in Winnipeg manages the Tabs for Wheelchairs Program.  They have 160 schools, 186 organizations, and hundreds of individuals collecting tabs for them!  They have donated nine wheelchairs in twelve years.  This year they are saving for a seven year old boy from Carman, Manitoba.   Please save and bring in your tabs.   Letís see how many tabs Souris School can collect.  I am thanking you in advance for your help!  Letís show what a caring community Souris is!

RUGBY
The Sabre Rugby teams hosted the Swan Valley Tigers on Friday in their last regular season game.  The girlís game featured two undefeated teams and the winner would take home field advantage through the playoffs.  The Sabres put on a strong performance controlling the Tigers advancing to a 22-0 win.  Brynna Walker led the way scoring a try and kicking a convert.  Also scoring tries were Carly Roper, Kelsey Penno and Sarah Williams.  The girls hosted Dauphin Wednesday night for the semi-final

The Boys game also featured two teams tied for second place and the winner would host the semi-final on Tuesday.  The Sabres had a strong first half controlling possession and territory, but let it slip away late in the second half as Swan Valley went on to win a tight game 10-5.  Luke Hill scored the lone try for the Sabres.  The boys now travel to Swan Valley Tuesday night for the semi-final match up.  Kick-off was at 6:00 pm in Swan River.

The Boys rugby team traveled to Swan River Tuesday night to meet the Swan Valley Tigers in a Westman High School Rugby semi-final.  The Sabres came out strong and controlled the game in it's early stages to take a 3-0 lead at the half by a penalty kick from Ben Swain.  The Tigers responded right after the kick-off in the second half scoring a try to take the lead 7-3.  The Sabres battled back and Luke Hill scored a try to take the lead 8-7 with 8 minutes left in the game.  After battling back, it wasn't meant to be.  Swan Valley scored a try off a penalty with 30 seconds left in the game to win it 12-8.  It was a great game played by both teams.

Mr. Yon would like to congratulate the boys on a great season and would like to personally thank the graduating seniors Kenneth May, Luke Hill, Ben Swain, and Ryan Elliott for all their effort and commitment over the years they spent with the Varsity program.  Good luck boys.

The Lady Sabre Rugby team hosted the Dauphin Clippers Wednesday night in their semi-final match-up.  The Sabres dominated the Clippers in similar fashion as they had done earlier in the season and defeated the Clippers 59-0.  Brynna Walker and Kelsey Penno each had three tries.  Allison Brigden scored two tries and adding single tries to the score were Emily Tuttosi, Maria McDowell and Carly Roper.  Sofia Viramontes kicked two converts.

The win advances the Sabres to the Westman High School Rugby Finals, which will be played in the Souris Bowl this Saturday.  The Sabres will take on their rivals from Swan Valley.  Kick-off is at 12 noon.  Come down and cheer on your Sabres!  Good luck ladies.
