NEWS FROM THE OFFICE

Attention public, staff and students.
In front of the main door to Souris School office is an Emergency-Fire Lane that must be kept open at all times.  Please do not park on the paved area leading into Souris School.  Also, we have had a number of reports of people operating their snowmobiles on school property.  This is not allowed, so please, do not operate your machines on School property.

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION
The school is now accepting registration for Kindergarten students for the 2010-2011 school year.  Parents who have children of Kindergarten age are asked to register these children with the school secretary between 8:00 a.m. ñ 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday at the school office.  Parents are asked to bring their childís birth certificate when they come to register.  Children must be five years of age on or before December 31st, 2010.  Anyone who is aware of neighbors and friends who may have children ready to begin Kindergarten in the fall are asked to pass the message on to them to assist with our school planning.

FAMILY FUN NIGHT
Some of the grade 11 and 12 Phys. Ed. students in conjunction with Parent Council are organizing a Family Fun Night to be held at Souris School on Monday, April 12.  The event will be geared toward preschool age students right up to grade 5.  For a cost of $5.00, each participant will be given a ìpassportî to all of the activities, which include games (bean bag toss, basketball shoot, hockey shoot, bowling, etc.), coloring contest, craft center, obstacle course, face paint and dress-up, fish pond, and a food station with cookie decorating, candy kebobs, and a cake walk.  The participants will have a chance to visit each center 3 times throughout the evening.  Prizes will be given to all.

To promote this night, each Early Years class will be making a basket for a raffle table.  If you are able to donate an item for this basket, it would be greatly appreciated.  With each passport, there will be 3 tickets for opportunities to win these baskets at the end of the evening.

This event is open to all families whether you have a child at Souris School or not.  We look forward to seeing you at this great evening.

Following are some ways to get involved or help out with what promises to be a very exciting event.
- donate gently used toys for the ìFish Pondî
-as an individual or family, bake a cake and decorate it for the Cake Decorating Contest that will be held at 12:30 on Mon. Apr. 12.  NO NUTS PLEASE  These cakes will be used for the cake walk prizes.
- make and donate other items of baking (cookies, muffins, rice krispie cake) for the cake walk prizes
- lend costumes for the dress-up station
- contact a parent council member to volunteer time or cookies for the  cookie decorating station

NEWS FROM THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT
Grade 7 Band
ìCongratulationsî to our Beginner Band students on receiving the top mark of 89 in the Beginner Band category at Virden Festival on Monday.  They performed very well, received complimentary comments along with a few points to work on in their next stage of playing.  Our Grade 7ís were great ambassadors for our school.  All of them should have a great sense of accomplishment and pride.

Thank you to chaperones Marie Peaslee, Darryl Jackson and Belinda West for assisting with supervision.  Special Thanks to the Souris Band Boosters for paying for the bus costs that day.

Virden Festival
Congratulations to the Grade 7 Band students who did some extra work to perform a solo, duet or trio at Festival.  All of them did very well and received good pointers to improve their playing.  Below are the results:

BAND NEWS
Congratulations to the bands who performed in the Virden Arts Festival.  There were positive comments from the adjudicator and the grade 8/9 bands received the highest mark in their session.

Please note that the Jazz Band will attend the Brandon Jazz Festival this Thursday, March 18th.  Students attending are required to pay a remaining balance of $21.00.  Please make cheques payable to Souris School.

A Band newsletter has gone out to Band students with more detailed information of upcoming events.

Upcoming Concerts:

Monday, March 22nd
Souris Concert at 7:30 p.m.
There will be a Senior Band rehearsal from 4:45-5:45 p.m. in the Souris Band Room.
There will be a Jazz Band rehearsal from 5:45-6:45 p.m. in the Souris Band Room.

Tuesday, March 23rd
Hartney Concert at 7:00 p.m. (Senior Band members and jazz members from Hartney will perform)
Please note that families whose last names end from K-P are asked to help with clean-up after the concert.

Please remember the Saddlerís Fundraiser is currently taking place until March 22nd.  Additional forms can be found on the Band website and/or in the Band Room.  (Band students should all have received order forms.)

MICROWAVE DUTY
ATTENTION:~ PARENTS WE WILL BE HAVING MICROWAVE TILL THE END OF APRIL.
~
Please arrive at the school at 11:45 a.m.~ Parents you will have to use main office doors as all other doors will be locked.~ You can go to Room 7 in the Early Yearís end.~ The microwaves are stored on a cart in this room.~ Someone could be taking a lesson so, PLEASE enter quietly.~ The instructions are on the side of the top microwave.~ The monthly calendar is on the top.

PARENT ADVISORY COUNCIL
Please plan on attending the next PAC meeting this coming Monday, March 15th @ 7:00 p.m. It is also the Annual General Meeting and the following positions are open for nominations: President and Treasurer as well as Early, Middle and Senior Years Representatives. If you would like to nominate someone for one of these positions, please contact one of the executive members below to have their name put forward (self-nominations will also be accepted). Parental involvement and equal representation at all grade levels, is necessary for PAC to have a strong voice in our school and so I encourage you ìget involved in Parent Council, to whatever degree you are able toî. The following are brief job descriptions of the positions that are open for nominations.

President ñ convene and preside at all meetings; prepare and present an agenda (in consultation with PAC executive); appoint committees when necessary and monitor their actions.

Treasurer ñ responsible for and report on all accounts; a signing officer; prepare a yearly financial report; prepare a draft budget once a year.
Early, Middle and Senior Years Representatives ñ represent the voice of parents with children in each of these areas at executive meetings.

CAREER EXPLORATION NEWS
The Countdown has begun!! The dates for our school production ìThe Beverly Hillbilliesî are May 6th, 7th and 8th. Stay tuned for more details and cast spotlights in the newsletters leading up to the play.
Thank you to Olds College for taking time to visit our school this week and deliver informative sessions.

Souris School had another successful Brandon Career Symposium Trip. The various displays and booths were a great exposure for our students.  The more informed the students are, the greater chance for achievement in the workplace.

Coming up in April.  Souris School Career Night and Job Fair will be held Tuesday, April 27, 2010 from 7:00 -8:30 p.m.  The focus will be from Grade 3 and up.  As well, everyone in the community is invited to check out careers and information on upgrading at post secondary institutions.

There are many scholarships available to Grade 12 students right now.

CAN YOU DONATE SOME CDís,  DVDís OR USED BOOKS?
Grade 5 will again be selling used books, and new this year CDíS & DVDíS during the March Parent/Teacher interviews. Money raised will pay for our trip to Lower Fort Garry.  If you have any books, CDís or DVDís that you would like to contribute, please leave them at the front office.  Thanks for your support!

GAMES AND PUZZLES
We are looking for board games and jigsaw puzzles to add to our life skills room.  If you have any that are suitable for kids aged 7 and up that you would be willing to donate, it would be greatly appreciated!

IF STUDENTS ARE ABSENT
A reminder to parents that if your son or daughter is absent from school (K-12), please contact the school by phone or email the teacher directly.  In Early and Middle Years, parents will be contacted if a town student is absent without prior notification to the homeroom teacher.  A phone call that morning from parents or an email directly to the teacher would be greatly appreciated.

SCHOOL CLOSURE
A reminder to parents that in the event of a school closure due to weather, it will be posted on the Souris School website at 7:00 a.m.  School closures are also announced on our local radio stations, however, our website is another source for this information.

BALL REGISTRATION
Just a reminder of the upcoming ball registration that will be held on Wednesday March 17th at Forbidden Flavours from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00  p.m.~

Registration will also be held on Wednesday March 24th and Thursday March 25th from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.~ (these are the parent teacher evenings at the school).~ Registration will be located in front of the School Office.~

ATTENTION MUSIC LOVERS!
A celebration of Chopin's 200th birthday featuring pianist Alexander Tselyakov will be held in Souris, Manitoba at the home of John and Lara Mason (153 Oak Avenue West, the log house north of the vet clinic.)

The concert will begin at 7:00 P.M. on Thursday, March 25th, 2010.~ We will enjoy the music of Chopin in a relaxed atmosphere and follow the concert with dessert.

This concert is a fundraiser for the Clear Lake Chamber Music Festival 2010.~ Tickets are $35 and must be purchased in advance, as space is limited to 30 seats.

Thank you to everyone who keeps saving the labels/UPC codes from Campbell Soup products, V8-Juice/Splash/Prego Spaghetti/Broth/Goldfish Crackers/Habitant/Chunky Chili Soup/Gardennay/Pace Salsa/Soup at Hand etc Just a reminder the bar codes have to be on them and if you can lay them flat and have them counted, that is also a big help.
