NEWS FROM MR. WILLIAMS
Hi, everyone.

Another two weeks have passed by.  I am amazed at how fast we have come to our first reporting period.  Pretty soon the snow will be falling and we will be brushing snow from our windshields.  I love winter.

We, the schools/students of Southwest Horizon School Division, received this letter from Plan Canada thanking us for our support last year.

On behalf of many students and families in Rwanda, Plan Canada would like to extend a heartfelt thank you for your gift of $13,194.78.

As you know your gift was directed to a multi-faceted project addressing access to quality education and economic security.  Your donation is helping to provide children, youth and women with the knowledge, skills, job opportunities, and financial resources necessary to break the cycle of poverty.

I am happy to share with you a progress report on this project and its achievements, only made possible by your donation.  Once again, Plan thanks you for being part of our global movement for change, supporting social justice for children in the developing world.  I sincerely hope that Plan can count on your support once again this year.

This was an amazing project.  Thank you to all the student leaders and staff leaders who made it happen.  A full report of what our donation provided to children in Rwanda will be placed on the Southwest Horizon School Division website.

I would like to remind everyone about access to the school parking lot during student drop-off prior to school and student pick-up after school.  There should be no vehicles entering and/or exiting the East entrance of the parking lot between 8:30 AM and 9:00 AM and between 2:45 and 3:30 PM.  Simply put, if you see a bus sitting in the Loading/Unloading area do not drive past it because it is either loading or unloading students.  The fine for doing so is over $500.

Also, please do not park in the No Parking areas on the street opposite the Elementary end of the building, as it is a No Parking Zone.  We thank you, in advance, for your continued cooperation.

November Interviews
Our Parent-Teacher Interviews will be held on the following dates:

Tuesday, November 22nd ñ 5:30-8:00 pm
Thursday, November 24th ñ 5:30-8:30 pm

Students in grades K-8 will have scheduled interview times during these two days, with our Senior Years following the drop-in format.  Any parent of a student who is taking a VC ñ Video-Conference ñ course with a teacher from another school who wishes to speak to that teacher please contact Mr. Williams at the school and he will facilitate that discussion.

Letters will be sent home to our K-8 parents in the up-coming weeks with your scheduled times.

We look forward to meeting with all parents and students at this time to discuss your son/daughterís progress

In an effort to reduce the amount of paper we use at the school we have decided to offer an email subscription for the Souris School newsletter.  If you would like to subscribe, please follow the link located on the left side of the Souris School website.  It will take you to a Google Form.  Simply fill out the form and hit the submit button.  You will begin to receive your newsletter via email.  We are going to continue to send out paper copies until Christmas for everyone but our goal is to get the majority of the newsletters delivered by email.  Paper copies will still be provided to those who do not have internet.  As well, we will still have some dropped off at various locations around town.

Have a great weekend.

REMEMBRANCE DAY SERVICE
November 9th, 2:30 p.m.
Souris School Gym
Public is Welcome

HEAD LICE CHECK
There have been some incidences of head lice in both the Middle and Senior Years end of the school. We remind parents to check heads on Friday evening.  This way, if treatment is necessary it can be done on the weekend and children can return to school Monday.  This is intended as a preventative reminder.

A few pointers for students to remember to prevent the spread of head lice:  1.  Do not share hats, combs, barrettes, helmets etc ñ anything that has touched someone elseís head   2.  Brush your hair often.  This damages the eggs.  3.  Sleeping bags, bedding at sleep-overs, stuffed animals, dress up clothes are also ways that lice spread.

Thanks for your help with this. This will be an ongoing reminder throughout the year.

HALLOWEEN COSTUMES
This is just a short reminder that all costumes worn to school should not be related to violence in any way.  Guns, swords, knives, axes and blood are not appropriate for the school scene.  Your cooperation is very much appreciated.
        ïMr. Glenn Wallmann

Book Fair....Book Fair....Book Fair.....Book Fair....Book Fair....Book Fair....
Just a reminder to all that the Book Fair will be held in the Souris School Library during the November Parent Teacher Interviews.  Everyone Welcome.  Great time to purchase a gift! I Hope to See You During the Fair

UNICEF
The grade 5 students will be canvassing the town for UNICEF on Monday, October 31st.  Please expect them between 12:45 and 2:15 p.m. that afternoon.  For those who will not be home and who would like to make a donation, please send the donation to one of the grade 5 classes or to Mr. Wallmann through the main office.  Thanks for your support!

Our school will again be taking part in Operation Christmas Child.  Families or groups may fill shoeboxes with items for needy children in Latin America and Africa.  If you would prefer to give one or two items, we will gladly make up the boxes here at school.  You may wish to give $7.00 to aid in shipping the boxes overseas.  Last year, our community sent about 200 boxes.  Items to include are:
Small new toys, school supplies, hygiene items such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, combs, and soap, hard, wrapped candy, sunglasses, T-shirts, ball caps, hair clips, socks.  Your box may be marked Girl or Boy, and may be for a
2-4 year old, a 5-9 year old, or a 10-14 year old.

Please do not include any war toys, liquids, used items, or anything that will melt in tropical heat.

Contributions are to be at the school by November 16th.  Thank you for your help in bringing joy and hope to very needy children.

TABS FOR TYSON
Hi!  My name is Jenna Coulthard and I am a Grade 12 student at Souris School.  My sister Ashley started the tabs collection bin at our school a couple of years ago.  Since she graduated last year, I will be looking after it from now on.  To date, our school/community has collected 101,000 tabs.  This year we will be collecting tabs for Tyson, a grade 10 students at Transcona Collegiate in Winnipeg.  He has Cerebral Palsy and is legally blind.  Please continue to support this worthwhile cause.  The collection bin is set up outside the office.  Keep bringing in those tabs!   Thanks.

At this point, Grade 12ís should be actively searching scholarship web sites, checking our scholarship board and applying for scholarships.  Please see me for further information.
