NEWS FROM THE OFFICE
Welcome Back!!! The new school year is off to a great start. We have a school population as of today of 504 students from K-Grade 12. We have lots of new faces in the school and at this time we would like to welcome everyone to our school community.
A welcome to the school community will be held at our Back to School Meet & Greet that will be held Monday, September 14th beginning at 5:30 p.m. We will be introducing all the staff at Souris School, along with two formal presentations at 6:00 and 6:30 that will take place in the main gym. Souris School Parent Advisory Council will be in attendance. If you are interested in joining our Parent Council, you can get information on this evening. We will be serving cookies and juice.
Following the Welcome, Grade 9-11 Awards will be held in the main gym at 7:00 p.m. All class and course awards from the 2008-2009 school year will be presented at this awards ceremony.
Please see the Middle Years News for what is planned for Middle Yearís parents.
As you are aware, all schools in Manitoba must create Pandemic Planning Preparedness Guidelines for the 2009-2010 School Year. Southwest Horizon has completed this task and we need everyoneís help in the school community to make this work. At Souris School, all staff will be going over all the effective health practices with the students in their classes. As well, if your child is sick with flu like symptoms, it is important that they stay home until these symptoms pass. If you require further information on this topic, there are two important sites ñ Manitoba Education, document entitled ìPreparing for Pandemic Influenza in Manitobaî and on Manitoba Public Health site ñ ìPandemic Pageî. These two sites will provide you with a wealth of information.

Communication
As the school year begins and our studentsí lives become busy, there may be occasions or situations that arise involving your son/daughter. Please contact your childís teacher or myself with these concerns. As teachers of your children, we want nothing more than for them to succeed and be happy here at school. It is this communication between home and school that will result in their success!

SHAVETHON FOR JESSIE ROBBINS
Jessie, a 13 year old girl from Elgin, MB has been diagnosed with Hodgkinís Disease, cancer of the lymph nodes. Jessie and her family travel to Winnipeg each week for doctor appointments & chemotherapy treatments. Family and friends are fundraising to help offset some of the expense of driving to Winnipeg every week. We are asking for pledges to shave our hair off in support of Jessie. Participants will be collecting over the next 2 ? weeks. Pledge forms may be picked up from Leanne Rolfe at the Souris School for anyone wishing to participate in the Shavethon. It will take place at the fundraising BBQ on September 27th @ the Souris Park.
If you have been missed and would like to make a pledge or have any questions, please call Chris Swaenepoel 483-3067 or Debbie Sherritt 483-2245.
An alternative to the Shavethon is to purchase a purple clip-on hair extension. Purple is the color for Hodgkinís. The extensions will be sold at the BBQ for $10. We would ask that you preorder them by calling Debbie Butler at Plaza Petals, 483-3174. Deadline to order is September 19th.
CAREER EXPLORATION NEWS
September is shaping up to be a very busy month. Please come and see me if you would like to make any changes to your timetable. Students have one week left to do so.
Within the next couple of weeks, I am going to start meeting with the Grade 12 students individually to do transcript and post-secondary checks.
If students are unsure of what they would like to do after they graduate, job shadowing is a perfect opportunity to find out. If they are interested in a particular career or perhaps a few different ones, please let me know and shadowing opportunities can be set up. Spending a day or two in an area may be the deciding factor of whether students feel a career is right or wrong for them. I am always open to getting guest speakers in as well, to give first hand knowledge of career interests.

PARENT ADVISORY COUNCIL
Welcome Back! Itís that time of year again: sleeping in is a thing of the past, school lunches decorate our counters in the morning, kids are cranky and everyone is just trying to get into the new routine. ~
~In spite of this busyness, SSPAC is looking forward to an exciting year! The councilís focus this year is going to be ìcommunicationî and this topic will weave its way into most meetings throughout the year. How do we communicate with our childrenís teacher? Where are there gaps and how can we improve upon what is already in place? What difference does effective communication have on my childís education? These are only some of the questions we will be asking throughout the year.
~We will also take a look at how SSPAC communicates with the parents it represents. We have put together an information sheet that lists our phone numbers, meeting dates and activities that SSPAC is involved in. Please take a few minutes to read through the information and hang on to it as a reference throughout the year. There is also a page for you to fill out and return to us, either with your child to the school or bring it with you to the ìMeet and Greetî at the school on Monday night. We will have a table set up and are looking forward to seeing some new faces, as well as some familiar ones!
Lastly, I would just like to point out that the first SSPAC meeting will be on Monday, September 21st starting at 7pm at the school. This year we are cutting back on the number of meetings we hold, from 10 meetings to only 6 meetings throughout the year. We would like to invite you to get involved with Parent Council by coming out to the first meeting. Look for the proposed agenda for that meeting in next weekís newsletter. As always, if you have any concerns or questions; or if you would like to see something discussed at the next meeting, please contact one of the executive members below.

RACHELíS CHALLENGE
Building a Chain Reaction of Kindness
Thursday, September 17th
Wawanesa School Gym ñ 7:00 p.m. ñ 8:00 p.m.
Southwest Horizon School Division is hosting an evening program open to all parents and community members called ìRachelís Challenge.î
Rachel Scott was the first person killed at Columbine High School on April 20th, 1999. Rachelís act of kindness and compassion coupled with the contents of her six diaries have become the foundation of the most life-changing school program in North America.
During the day, there will be assemblies for students in Grades 7-12. Powerful video/audio footage of Rachelís life and the Columbine tragedy holds student spell-bound during a one hour school presentation that motivates them to positive change in the way they treat others.
The evening presentation is for parents and community leader. This session is similar to the assembly program and ends with a specific challenge to parent and community leaders, showing them how they can reinforce the decisions their youth are making.
Please plan to attend. All are welcome. For more information, please contact Wawanesa School at 483-6298 or visit the website:

CAMPBELL SOUP LABELS
Thank you to everyone who keeps saving the labels/UPC codes from Campbell Soup products, V8-Juice/Splast/Prego Spaghetti/Broth/Goldfish Crackers/Habitant/Chunky Chili Soup/Gardennay/Pace Salsa/Soup at Hand etc. It has been amazing just how many labels can be saved from the garbage. Our last deposit was made September 6th with 8,214 points. In March we deposited 5610 points. So keep those labels & UPC barcodes coming in. If interested, you can go to www.campbellsoup.ca, and then click on labels for education for information. Keep those labels
coming! Just a reminder the bar codes have to be on them and if you can lay them flat and have them counted, that is also a big help.
