NEWS FROM MR. WILLIAMS
Hi, everyone.
What a beautiful week of weather we have had. The sun feels so warm this time of year.
Important reminder to students and parents.
- Morning exercises begin at Souris School at 8:55 a.m.. Students are expected to be in their first class prior to that time.
- We have a warning bell at 8:50 a.m. Students should begin to move to their classrooms at that time.
Presently we have a number of students who are walking in the doors while the national anthem is playing or during announcements.
Time management is one the the most important ìsoft skillsî that a person can develop.
ìSoft skillsî is a term relating to a collection of personal, positive attributes and competencies that enhance your relationships, job performance, and value to the employment market.
We thank you for your anticipated support and cooperation regarding this issue.
I would like to mention to all parents to make sure to check out the new Student Portal for your son(s) and/or daughter(s) who are in Gr. 6-12. Here, you will find assessment and attendance information. In our opening mailout you would have received a sheet of paper with a username and password for each student. The link to the portal is located on the Souris School website near the bottom of the lefthand column. We would like to receive any feedback you may have about the Portal. Please email me with your thoughts.
We are continuing the process of revamping our Attendance Policy. You will notice that attendance letters are being sent out to all students in gr. 9-12 who have missed 3 classes. It should be noted that these letters are for informational purposes only and that we do not make a distinction between excused and unexcused absences. Our primary purpose for sending out the letter is to provide parents and/or caregivers with pertinent information about their childís attendance.
Reminders:
LifeTouch Photos ñ Friday, October 7th.
Have a great day.
TERRY FOX RUN/WALK
Once again Mother Nature did her part as we held The Terry Fox Run/Walk on Wednesday afternoon. Thanks go out to Carol Turner and all the terrific EA's, staff members and parents who worked water stations, watched at railroad tracks or highways, and to the RCMP for their continued support. Two special thanks go out to Miss Snaith's class who collected and counted the EY money, and finally to Mrs.Sobrey (who really did all the work!!). Great job Souris School!

TABS FOR TYSON
Hi! My name is Jenna Coulthard and I am a Grade 12 student at Souris School. My sister Ashley started the tabs collection bin at our school a couple of years ago. Since she graduated this year, I will be looking after it from now on. To date, our school/community has collected 101,000 tabs. This year we will be collecting tabs for Tyson, a grade 10 students at Transcona Collegiate in Winnipeg. He has Cerebral Palsy and is legally blind. Please continue to support this worthwhile cause. The collection bin is set up outside the office. Keep bringing in those tabs! Thanks.
ïJenna Coulthard
WAY TO GO DANNY!
Danny Peaslee went to Florida to represent the Special Olympics in the International Tournament at Port St. Lucie.~ He played 3 rounds and won every round, bringing home a gold medal.~~~~~~~
COATS FOR KIDS
Attention parents/guardians and students. There will be a box at the office starting Monday, September 18th for Coats for Kids! Drop off a jacket you donít wear or have grown out of and keep a child warm this winter! Any donation is greatly appreciated.
WARM thanks from the Student Council!
CHOIR
Middle Years/High School Choir first practice is October 12th at 3:45 to 5:00 p.m. The choir will go for the whole school year so if sports interfere for a couple months, no big deal! We will focus on 5 or 6 songs for Festival Fine Arts Night and community functions.
I do not care how well you sing, I only care that you love to sing. It will be fun ñ you will learn some sign language and how to ìdrumî. We are also looking for a student pianist ñ so that we are a total student choir.
ïMrs. Patti Kirkwood
CONGRATULATIONS BRENYN!
Every month the school canteen, Lorraineís Lunches (Sunflower Teahouse) is having a draw for $10.00. If you purchase lunch from the canteen you can put your name in on a chance for a draw. This month the lucky winner was Brenyn Green.
MIDDLE YEARS NEWS
Grade 7 & 8 Volleyball ñ Our girls and boys volleyball is now fully underway! The girls practice on Mondays and Wednesdays, with the boys practicing Tuesdays and Thursdays. Mrs. Sobry and Ms. Snaith are coaching the girls, while Mrs. Rolfe and Miss Svistovski are coaching the boys. A meeting will take place on October 6th, when their game schedules will be determined. Once this is finalized, the students will be receiving this information.
Student Portals ñ Please be sure to frequently check your childís progress and attendance through our new portal access. Simply go to our school website (http://schools.shmb.ca/sci) and click on ìStudent Portalî. All parents received their username and password in the information package that was sent home to parents in the fall. If you have misplaced this information, please have your child contact their teacher and we will provide you with the necessary passwords.

A brief discussion was held about the timeline of the minutes. Minutes to be out by Friday of the week of the meeting and all in attendance must confirm receipt of minutes and notify Jackie of any changes by Wednesday of the following week. Minutes go to the school on Thursday for publication in the newsletter on Friday.
Jackie reported that no further correspondence had been received.

Heather to get in touch with School Division in regards to SPPACís reimbursement for the MAPC conference.
Leanne and Heather to work together on the student fees. Should expect to receive the student fees of approximately $500 by the end of September.
Heather went over the budget. The budget was approved at the March AGM. This was an update.
Business arising:
Nutrition Committee Report ñ Chair of this committee Shirlee Goldrich shared with us some information that she has researched about nutrition and different policies. The committee will meet and have a full report at the October meeting.
Shirlee moved that we appoint Gill Robertson as the Allergy Rep. Seconded by Heather. The Allergy Rep will sit on the nutrition committee.

Acoustical panels have been put up. Glynn Warnica willing to come and talk to the executive about the panels. It is very expensive to have a sound technician come out and check the sound quality. A speaker system has been ordered and will be installed in the center of the gym and will go out in all directions.

The Back to School BBQ was a huge success. Jaycee thanked Jackie and Shirlee for cooking the hot dogs. Scavenger hunt was a great idea and a good way to meet the new teachers. Draw for the Ipod was definitely a good drawing card. IPod was won by Tristen Couling. Look at extending the BBQ to 6:30 pm for next year.
Jaycee asked the administration in attendance about the School Plan, what the process is and the timeline. Souris School will be working on this in conjunction with the Division plan. They are looking at streamlining this process. Literacy and numeracy are definitely a priority in the plan. Mr. Williams to give it some thought if there is an area or opportunity for parents or SPPAC to become involved in the process. They look at a scope of 5 ñ 10 years, choose 3 major goals, and the plan is placeed every 3 years.
Principalís Report:
Mr. Williams reported that the school year has started off very well and has been very busy. Highlights of the year so far:
-The student portal is up and running. This is a test year. Students have received their access codes and passwords in the welcome back packages.
-Welcome packages were sent out to all families (1 per family), this is something that will be continued to be streamlined. Possibility that this will be done over the portal. It was mentioned that there was only 1 internet agreement per package. Should include additional internet agreements in the event of multiple children. Working very hard to keep information on file to decrease the amount of forms going home and not having to fill out repetitive information.
-Senior Staff are working on an attendance policy
-Lockers must be locked; empty lockers will be sealed up. Lockers that are not locked by a certain date will be locked by the school, and you will be charged for the cost of the lock. Students have been very receptive to this. They are encouraged to look after their home.
-Mrs. Rolfe reported that the playground equipment should be installed by the end of October. Playground area will have garbage cans, and picnic tables. Waiting on Zenith paving to complete the basketball court. Middle Years have a designated area outside.
-Mr. Williams reported that construction for the grooming room will begin in October. It will be located near the Early Yearís staff room
-Some discussion was held about school supplies. Some concerns about the specific types of supplies and the quantity of supplies. Clarification about dry erase markers, some teachers give their students individual white boards to do work on. Leanne to discuss with teachers about streamlining some supplies.
-Some discussion was held about upcoming field trips/events for students. Would it be possible to be notified very early on in the year so parents and students could budget for upcoming expenses. Mrs. Rolfe indicated that this was on the agenda for the next staff meeting.
-Jaycee reported that Marie Peaslee is looking after microwave duty again this year. It is being filled by students who need volunteer credits. Parents still may be needed to fill in occasionally.
Trustees Report: No trustee in attendance, no report available.
No other business to report.
Meeting adjourned at 9:04 p.m. by Shelley, seconded by Gill. ~

Last night the Boissevain Bronco boyís volleyball team gave our crew a real test. They won the first two sets playing great defensively. Our boys turned the tide in the third and won in five. The scores were 21-25, 23-25, 25-20, 25-8 and 15-3.
